Weather forecast:
1. Legal Mushroom, Hemp Dispensary Shutting Down St. Pete Store (patch.com) — St. Petersburg shoppers have just one more day to visit Chillum’s Central Avenue shop before the legal mushroom and hemp dispensary shuts its local doors and consolidates operations in Tampa. The closure, driven by slow sales and rising rent in the eastern Grand Central District, also means St. Pete loses the company’s main production site for its legal psychedelic-adjacent mushroom products and education-focused Learn Euphoria brand.
2. Can 500,000 ‘Bootleg’ T-Shirts Reopen Haslam’s? One St. Pete Artist Is Trying (patch.com) — A St. Petersburg artist is selling thousands of nostalgic Haslam’s Bookstore T-shirts outside the long-closed Central Avenue landmark, hoping to spark conversation and maybe someday help revive the beloved shop. His performance-art-style campaign highlights uncertainty around Haslam’s future and the wave of nearby business closures that have reshaped the Grand Central District block.
3. Serving our Elderly Veterans Summit - St. Petersburg, FL (va.gov) — Elderly veterans and their families in St. Petersburg can attend a free support and resource summit at St. Petersburg College on May 9, 2026. The event will feature speakers, panels, and local service providers focused on aging-related challenges, plus lunch and refreshments, with options to register as an attendee, volunteer, or resource-table host.
4. Places This Week: A new Belleair Beach waterfront home (stpetecatalyst.com) — Several high-end real estate moves are reshaping parts of St. Petersburg, including a downtown strip center on 1st Avenue S. now listed for $9.27 million and a Snell Isle waterfront estate that just sold well below asking. Nearby, the former Jay’s Fabric Center site is becoming an AquaSonic car wash, while Belleair Beach, Treasure Island, and St. Pete Beach see new luxury listings and hospitality offerings.
5. Mayors attend State of the Beaches panel to discuss property taxes, hurricane recovery (fox13news.com) — Local beach mayors gathered at St. Petersburg College’s Institute for Strategic Policy Solutions to debate hurricane recovery and a proposal to eliminate property taxes, warning it could hurt small cities that depend on that revenue. They also described ongoing rebuilding, funding challenges, and efforts to boost storm resiliency with stronger infrastructure along nearby beach communities.
