Weather forecast:
1. Former Playhouse Theater Site Eyed For Affordable Housing Project: Report (patch.com) — A long-vacant historic theater site in St. Petersburg’s Grand Central District could soon become a 12-story, 150-unit affordable housing tower with ground-floor commercial space. Developer Blue Sky Communities, already behind other local projects, hopes the JR Tower concept will ease downtown staffing and housing pressures while transforming the former Playhouse Theater property near I-275.
2. National Day of Prayer (stpetecatalyst.com) — Tonight, St. Petersburg faith communities will gather at Eckerd College’s GO Pavilion for a free, citywide National Day of Prayer service starting at 6:30 p.m. Led by the locally founded Seven x 7 movement, pastors from churches across South St. Pete will pray for the nation, local community, families, and schools in one of Pinellas County’s largest interdenominational events.
3. St. Petersburg Police honor 15 fallen officers during annual memorial ceremony (fox13news.com) — St. Petersburg residents just saw their police department pause to honor 15 officers killed in the line of duty, with Chief Anthony Holloway, Mayor Ken Welch, and regional agencies gathering at Demens Landing Park. The annual ceremony at the Heroes of St. Pete Police and Fire Monument highlighted sacrifices dating back to 1905, including the three officers lost in the department’s deadliest modern year, 2011.
4. Tierra Verde Marina redevelopment proposal approved after hundreds protest St. Pete meeting (fox13news.com) — St. Petersburg’s Development Review Commission has narrowly approved a scaled-back but still controversial redevelopment of the Tierra Verde Marina, despite hundreds of residents packing City Hall in opposition. The project, under city jurisdiction but using county zoning, will add taller dry storage, new amenities, and retail while neighbors worry about traffic, storm safety, and environmental impacts as permitting and possible appeals move ahead.
