📰 News we're reading

1. Downtown Achievement Awards celebrate St. Pete community (stpetecatalyst.com) — St. Petersburg leaders and businesses were honored this week at the Downtown Achievement Awards, highlighting projects that are reshaping the city’s core. From upgrades coming to Williams Park to the Cordova Inn’s historic expansion and longtime advocates for downtown growth, the event spotlighted people whose work directly influences how residents live, work, and gather in St. Pete.

2. Tropicana Field site value jumped roughly 10% with new appraisals (tampabay.com) — St. Petersburg officials just received new appraisals showing the Tropicana Field/Historic Gas Plant District land is worth roughly 10% more than three years ago, now around $380–$390 million. That higher valuation will shape Mayor Ken Welch’s upcoming choice of a developer and future negotiations over how the 78-acre site is rebuilt, including housing, offices, and potentially park space.

3. Tampa Bay Rays and local officials announce a tentative $2.3B deal for a new ballpark (sfchronicle.com) — A new $2.3 billion ballpark deal for the Tampa Bay Rays is moving forward in Tampa and Hillsborough County, even as the team continues playing at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg through at least 2028. Local readers should note that an earlier plan to redevelop the Trop site with a new ballpark in St. Petersburg collapsed last year, raising long-term questions about where the Rays will ultimately call home.

4. Kelly Kirschner reports more than $100K in first week of campaign for CD 16 (floridapolitics.com) — A new Democratic candidate for Florida’s 16th Congressional District, Kelly Kirschner, has raised more than $100,000 in his first week and secured an endorsement from former St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman. With the redrawn district now stretching into southern Pinellas County, this race could influence how local concerns like insurance costs and Social Security are represented in Washington.
