📰 News we're reading

1. Art Studio, Paint-And-Sip Lounge Coming To The Edge District (patch.com) — St. Petersburg residents will soon have a new creative hangout in the Edge District, as Sunshine City Paint prepares to open a women- and veteran-owned art studio and paint-and-sip lounge on Central Avenue this summer. The family-friendly spot plans kids’ classes, open canvas time, wine-night workshops, and private celebrations, with wine, beer, and seltzers on tap to round out the experience.

2. FL Property Manager To Pay $60K In Navy Sailor Eviction Case: U.S. DOJ (patch.com) — A St. Petersburg property management company, Rental Marketing Solutions, will pay $60,000 and a civil penalty after federal officials said it filed a false affidavit that led to an unlawful eviction judgment against an active duty Navy sailor. The settlement, which includes credit monitoring and new compliance procedures, is the largest amount the Justice Department has obtained for a single servicemember in such a case and underscores protections that also affect local renters and landlords.

3. $67 million upgrade complete at St. Pete sewer plant shut down by Helene (baynews9.com) — St. Petersburg’s Northeast Sewer Plant just finished a $67 million hardening project, so it can now keep operating through a storm surge up to 15 feet. After Hurricane Helene’s shutdown spilled sewage and halted water use, city leaders say this upgrade is a key step in a billion‑dollar resilience plan and ties into a proposed $600 million infrastructure bond voters will see in November.

4. USF hosts ‘Ocean of Support' fundraiser to rebuild Marine Science lab destroyed by fire (wfla.com) — USF’s St. Petersburg campus is rallying after a lightning-sparked fire destroyed its Marine Science lab, wiping out research samples, equipment, and the building’s roof. A Friday “Ocean of Support” fundraiser brought donations, music, and a silent auction as staff pledged to keep students on track academically and protect jobs while rebuilding plans take shape.

5. Tampa Bay is deep in drought. Is development adding to our water woes? (tampabay.com) — St. Petersburg residents are being urged to conserve water as Tampa Bay’s deepening drought collides with rapid regional growth, straining shared supplies. Local officials highlight the city’s reclaimed‑water system and denser development as key tools, while warning that thirsty lawns and sprawling suburbs across the region could push demand beyond what utilities can sustainably deliver.
