ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A viral Swedish candy shop that garnered attention after popping up in Hyde Park Village last year celebrated the grand opening of a downtown St. Petersburg location on Sunday.
The Pirate Candy Shop opened its doors at 1614 Central Ave., in between Central Ave. Vapors and Zaytoon Grill.
The space formerly housed Tabatha Exquisite Touch Salon and Spa, which moved down the road to 1592 Central Ave.
“Come explore our famous Pick ‘n’ Mix Swedish candy selection, discover new favorites, meet the team, and celebrate with fellow candy lovers,” the Pirate Candy Shop’s owners wrote in a social media post ahead of the grand opening.
The shop offers about 100 different authentic Swedish candies, this includes popular Bubs brand flavors, as well as Dubai chocolate, angel hair chocolate, wax candy and crystal candy.
Bubs brand candies, founded by the Lindström family in 1992 before being acquired by Orkla Confectionery & Snacks (a Norwegian consumer conglomerate) in recent years, have gone viral in the U.S. on social media, particularly TikTok, the Pirate Candy Shop said in a blog on its website.
The candies are known for their “unique textures, flavors, all-natural ingredients, and intriguing and appealing shapes and mixes of colors and flavors,” the shop said. They’re also gelatin-free, palm oil-free and vegan.
Among the most popular Bubs candies and gummies are the Bubs Skulls, the Bubs Ovals, the Bubs Tutti Frutti rhombus-shaped sweets, and most recently the Octopus candies, according to the Pirate Candy Shop.
“The Pirate Candy Shop is more than just a candy store—it’s a passion project rooted in sharing Swedish culture,” according to a social media post from the shop. “Adam, one of our co-owners is from Sweden, and bringing authentic Swedish candy to Florida has always been about more than sweets. It’s about introducing people to a beloved tradition, creating new memories, and sharing a little piece of home with our community.”
