ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Police are investigating a Wednesday afternoon fatal shooting at the Childs Park YMCA.
Officers responded to reports of a shooting at the YMCA, located at 691 43rd Street S., just after 2 p.m., St. Petersburg police said in a news release.
An 18-year-old victim was taken to a hospital with gunshot wounds and later died of his injuries. The victim's name isn't being released.
Investigators determined that the victim and another 18-year-old man traveled from Clearwater to St. Petersburg to purchase a gun.
The two met My' Kiese Johnson, 18, and another man at the YMCA.
The group went into a bathroom to conduct the transaction, and it turned violent, as gunfire was exchanged, police said.
Johnson, of St. Petersburg, was shot in the face during the shootout, suffering a minor injury. He went to the hospital on his own for treatment.
Afterward, Johnson was arrested and charged with attempted felony murder, police said.
Another suspect, identified only as Johnson's companion, remains at large, investigators said.
