Man Dies After Being Found Injured In Road: St. Pete Police

The victim's dog, found by his side, was fatally shot by officers when the animal wouldn't let them near the body, St. Pete police said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 52-year-old man died Wednesday night after officers found him seriously injured in the road on Quincy Street South, St. Petersburg police said in a news release.

Officers responded around 8:15 p.m. to the 2500 block of Quincy Street South, where they found the man bleeding and lying in the road with a pit bull mix on a leash.

The dog prevented rescue workers from approaching the man and became agitated, biting the victim, police said. An officer then fired his weapon, killing the dog.

Investigators later determined that the dog belonged to the man.

The Pinellas County Medical Examiner's Office will determine the cause of the man's death, which police have deemed "suspicious."

Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
