Bicyclist Killed in St. Pete Crash

The accident happened late Monday night.

A 55-year-old St. Petersburg man is dead following a late-night crash Monday.

According to the St. Petersburg Police Department, the accident happened as Mark Alexander Hanson, 46, was heading south on 28th Street North in the curb lane around 11:34 p.m. At the same time, a bicycle, ridden by Glenn Wheeler Coggeshall, was also headed south.

Hanson, police wrote in an email to media, was unable to see Coggeshall. His Hyundai Elantra struck the bicycle’s rear tire, throwing Coggeshall, who hit his head on the car.

Coggeshall, police said, was pronounced dead at the scene.

“There is no overhead lighting in the area and Coggeshall, who was wearing dark clothing, did not have any lights on his bicycle,” the email stated. “Impairment was not a factor for either and charges are not expected.”
