Central Avenue Building Can Be Saved, Officials Say

Restoration work is being reviewed.

When a hole opened up under a building at 670 Central Ave. Thursday, the fate of the structure remained unclear.

City officials, however, have said that the building’s owner and engineers believe the building can be restored to its original form.

“This morning the building owner and all parties that were present agreed that the owner would take over responsibility for the structure and assume responsibility for all the resources that were used to stabilize the situation,” a Friday email from the city to media stated. “At this point the building is being treated as a construction site and the building owner will move forward with the stabilization and rebuilding of this project.”

The hole’s opening forced a portion of Central Avenue to close until early Friday. The area was also without water for a time as a water main leak was repaired.
