City Workers To Use Smoke To Test Sewers

The maintenance project will take place Wednesday morning along 31st Street South.

Workers from the St. Petersburg Water Resources Department will perform sanitary sewer smoke testing from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesday along 31st Street South from 1st Avenue South to 5th Avenue South. Door hangers announcing the test were left Tuesday at businesses in the testing area.

Smoke testing is performed as part of ongoing maintenance to locate potential sources of inflow into the sanitary sewer system.

Smoke may enter buildings through dry floor drains, utility traps (toilets,
showers or sinks not used on a regular basis), or through faulty pipes or
seals. The smoke is non-toxic, non-staining and does not leave any residue. If smoke is seen in the building, simply open windows or doors and exit the area.
