Florida's Texting While Driving Ban May Become Stricter
A newly introduced bill would give law enforcement more authority to pull people over for texting behind the wheel.

Florida’s texting while driving ban doesn’t go far enough.
That’s according to state Rep. Keith Perry, R-Gainesville, who recently filed a bill to remedy what he sees as a shortcoming in the current law. The state’s ban on texting behind the wheel was passed in 2013. The problem with the law as Perry, and others see it, is that it only makes a violation a secondary offense. That means motorists cannot be pulled over specifically for texting. A citation for the offense can only be written if a driver is pulled over and cited for another reason.
Perry’s bill, filed earlier this month, would change that, making texting behind the wheel a primary offense. A similar bill has also been introduced in the Florida Senate.
