TREASURE ISLAND, FL — Officers responding to calls about an alligator spotted on Treasure Island Beach the night of May 11 were surprised to find the reported reptile was actually a large, detailed sand sculpture.

“Crikey! Look at the size of that gator one of our (Treasure Island Police Department) officers tried rounding up on Treasure Island Beach last night,” the city of Treasure Island tweeted. “Ok, it wasn’t a real gator, it was just a crafty crafted sand sculpture.”

The city also warned against leaving sand sculptures on the beach overnight during seabird and sea turtle nesting season, which began in April and runs through October.

“We love the talented people creating works of art in the sand, but with it being turtle nesting season, remember to flatten sandcastles/sculptures before you leave,” the city tweeted. “The sea turtles will thank you!”
