Man Killed in St. Pete Crash Identified

The 68-year-old man was killed on 54th Avenue South Tuesday morning.

The St. Petersburg Police Department continues to investigate a fatal traffic crash that occurred on 54th Avenue South Tuesday morning.

According to the agency, Thomas Nickolas Olsen, 68, was struck and killed while walking east on the southside of the road around 6 a.m. The incident was classified as a possible hit-and-run.

Police say that box truck driver Austin Azar called them after hearing media reports about the crash.

“He said conditions were dark and rainy when he was driving his box truck in the area and thought he hit something, but didn’t realize it was a person,” an email from the agency to media stated. After hearing reports about the incident, Azar began to think he might have hit a person the agency noted.

“He has been cooperating with the investigation,” the email said.
