ST. PETERSBURG, FL — The city of St. Petersburg will pick up discarded live Christmas trees during a one-time, city-wide collection.

Collection starts Saturday and runs until Feb. 2, according to the news release from the city. No artificial trees will be picked up.

Before putting a tree out for pick up, the city asks that residents remove all lights, ornaments, garland, tree stands, plastic tree disposal bags and other decorations.

Trees should be placed out for collection Saturday before 7 a.m. in the same place where trash is usually collected, the city said. If trash is picked up at the curb, it should be placed at the curb; if trash is picked up in the alley, trees should be placed in the alley.

Don’t place trees inside trash or recycling bins or lean them against electrical poles, trash containers, water meters or anything else.

Collection could take up to four weeks, according to the city. After Feb. 2, those who missed the collection can request a special pickup at stpete.org/service or by calling the Sanitation Department at 727-893-7398 during normal business hours.

Residents can also drop trees off at one of the city's brush sites listed below:

  • 7750 26th Ave. N.
  • 2500 26th Ave. S.

  • 2453 20th Ave. N.

Brush sites are open daily, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Residents should bring a photo ID and water bill for proof of residency.

Trees will be turned into mulch, which is free to residents at the brush sites.
