Lightning Strikes Gym, Sparks Fire At St. Pete Catholic High School: Officials

A lightning strike sparked a fire after hitting the gym at St. Petersburg Catholic High School, the Catholic Diocese said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Lightning hit the gym at St. Petersburg Catholic High School Tuesday afternoon as storms moved through the area, the Catholic Diocese of Saint Petersburg said in a social media post.

All students and faculty at the school, located at 6333 9th Ave. N., are safe, and there were no injuries

Smoke was seen coming from the gym's roof as local fire crews worked “to control the damage,” the diocese said in its post around 4:40 p.m.

The school’s junior varsity volleyball team was practicing in the gym at the time of the lightning strike, Allison Munden, the diocese’s communications director, told WFLA.
