ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A St. Petersburg man faces charges after trying to carjack an Amazon driver who was out making deliveries Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Jonathon Carroll, 22, was charged with carjacking with a weapon or firearm and violation of probation of a previous felony robbery, according to his arrest affidavits from the St. Petersburg Police Department.

Around 1 p.m., the driver was standing outside his truck in the 4200 block of 12th Avenue North when Carroll ran toward him.

Out of fear, the driver got into his van and tried to close the door, but Carroll fought with him to open it, police said. Once he got into the van, the victim was able to escape.

Carroll got into the driver’s seat and tried to steal the van, but he wasn’t able to get it into gear, SPPD said.

Though the victim didn’t see a box cutter, Carroll told police that he had one during the carjacking attempt, according to his arrest record.
