ST. PETERSBURG, FL – The St. Petersburg Police Department is investigating a package theft and injury crash that occurred Wednesday afternoon.
According to the agency, police received a call about a man taking packages from outside a home in the 400 block of 9th Avenue Northeast around 4 p.m. When an officer arrived on the scene, the man, an email from the agency said, fled and got into a car driven by a woman. The car took off at a high rate of speed, the email said, but the officer did not give chase.
Only a few minutes later, the car was involved in a crash with another vehicle at 5th Avenue North and 1st Street.

Police say the man and woman bailed out of the car and had an infant with a visible head injury with them.

“Officers converged on the area,” the email said. “The two suspects and the infant were found hiding in some vegetation in the 200 block of 5th Avenue North. When confronted by officers, the male suspect held the infant out in front of him as if to use it as shield against the officers. The infant was removed from the male suspect’s grasp and he and the two suspects were arrested without further resistance.”
The man has been identified as Derick Markis Corbett, 23, and the female Casandra Sue-Lynn Cole, 21. The baby is Javion Corbett, 6 months.
“It appears he is the son of the couple, but that has not been confirmed as yet,” an email from the police department said.
All three were still being treated at the hospital, the agency said. Derick Corbett is listed as a trauma alert with a head injury. Police say Cole and the baby do not appear to have life threatening injuries.
Police expect both adults will be charged with several counts of burglary. Child endangerment charges are also expected.
“Corbett, who was driving, will be also be charged with fleeing and eluding, no valid driver’s license and leaving the scene of an accident involving injuries,” the email said.
