Police: 2-Year-Old Boy in Body Cast After Being Alone with Mother's Boyfriend

Suspect maintains his innocence, says he doesn't know how the boy got hurt, according to St. Petersburg Police.

A 2-year-old boy is in a body cast and the man responsible for his care is facing abuse charges, according to the St. Petersburg Police Department.

The boy suffered a broken leg, fractured rib, a lacerated liver, traumatic injury to the pancreas, and bruising to the feet, shin, center chest area and right eye. Police say the boy’s injuries are consistent with blunt force trauma.

Deontray Antwan Bonner-Walker, 34 of St. Petersburg, was left alone with the boy when the victim’s mother, Bonner-Walker’s girlfriend, went into labor on Nov. 29. About four hours after his girlfriend went to the hospital, Bonner-Walker called the woman’s mother telling her something was wrong with her grandson’s leg, according to the police report.

The grandmother and Bonner-Walker took the boy to All Children’s Hospital where doctors examined the child, found injuries an accident could not cause and called the police.

Police officers later learned Bonner-Walker had previously been booked on domestic assault charges against the boy’s mother and by living with her was in violation of his pre-trial release. They arrested him for that violation and took him to jail without bond.
