Propane Leak Contained
Traffic was being rerouted in the area of 85th Avenue North and Dr. Martin Luther King.

Update Aug. 10, 6:09 p.m.: St. Petersburg Fire Rescue is reporting the gas leak at 930 85th Ave. N. has been contained. The 500-pound tank used for utilities was leaking when firefighters arrived on the scene, the agency reported.
“In order to control the leak, fire crews evacuated the area and completed a controlled burn off of the remaining gas that was in the propane tank,” an email from the agency to media stated. “With the help from Ferrell gas company, fire crews safety completed a controlled burn of the remaining gas inside the propane tank.”

The St. Petersburg Fire Department is investigating a possible underground propane tank leak at 970 85th Avenue North.
According to the police department, some residents in an adjacent condominium complex have been evacuated. The police department has also blocked off Dr. Martin Luther King Street for northbound traffic at 83rd Avenue North and southbound traffic between 87th Avenue North to 83rd Avenue North.

“We are asking drivers to avoid the area is possible,” an email to media from the police department stated.
Repairs are anticipated to take several hours.
