“Donald Trump’s invocation of an emergency to justify a border wall is an attack on our democracy. It is an end-run around Congress, the democratic process, and the will of voters; it represents yet another step toward autocracy,” said the 25 organizations opposed to the Trump's declaration of an emergency in a joint statement.

H.R. 1, the For the People Act, calls for legislative reforms including: independent redistricting commissions, citizen-funded elections, closing the revolving door between special interests and government and protecting voters against discrimination. Democratic Sen. Kathy Castor of Tampa and U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist of St. Petersburg are co-sponsors of the bill.
