Saying Goodbye to the St. Petersburg Pier

The iconic structure is coming down to make way for Pier Park.

The face of St. Petersburg is changing.

The iconic pier that has symbolized the waterfront district for decades is coming down to pave the way for the construction of the new $46 million Pier Park. Before that happens, however, the city is playing host to one last event at the old pier so residents can say their goodbyes.

“Celebrating the St. Petersburg Pier: Honoring the Past, while Pursing the Future” takes place Friday, Aug. 21, from 5 to 7 p.m. The free event is meant to give residents one last look at the inverted pyramid that has dominated the city’s landscape since 1973.

During the event, attendees will be asked to share their best memories of the pier and write farewell messages about the structure. Since we know not everyone with a great pier memory can make it out for the event, we’d like to hear your stories here.

The St. Petersburg City Council approved a contract for the construction of the new Pier Park during its July 9 meeting. Once construction is completed, the new park will feature observation areas, an overlook restaurant, space for cycling, jogging, walking and retail activities. In addition, 17,000 square feet of floating docks will be constructed for fishing and a bait shop, according to the city’s website.

Construction is hoped to begin in 2017.
