TAMPA, FL — As landmarks across the nation light up with various shades of blue to celebrate front-line heroes in the war against the coronavirus, the Sunshine Skyway Bridge appeared in hues of green and blue for an equally good cause.

The display is in honor of National Donate Life Month to shine a light on the need for life-saving organ donations and to honor local donors during April.

Across the country, 112,000 men, women and children wait for a life-saving organ transplant. Around 5,400 of those people live in Florida. Even during the coronavirus pandemic, organ donations are continuing to save the lives of those patients desperately in need of a transplant.

In 2019, thanks to the generosity of 262 donors and their families, LifeLink of Florida provided a record number of organs for transplant with 756 lives saved. LifeLink credits that success to the support of donor families, the forethought of individuals who chose to join their state donor registry, improved processes and public education.

Individuals are encouraged to register to become an organ, eye and tissue donor by clicking here.
