St. Pete Pier Demolition Chronicled in 30 Seconds
The pier's removal paves the way for the $46 million Pier Park project.
The face of St. Petersburg has changed dramatically over the past few months as construction crews undertook the daunting process of dismantling the pier that once dominated the city’s waterfront landscape.
The entire pier dismantling was captured on a video that shows the three-month process compressed into 30 seconds. While the inverted pyramid no longer stands sentinel over the city, the new $46 million Pier Park will someday soon replace it.
The St. Petersburg City Council approved a contract for construction of Pier Park during its July 9 meeting. Once construction is completed, the new park will feature observation areas, an overlook restaurant, space for cycling, jogging, walking and retail activities. In addition, 17,000 square feet of floating docks will be constructed for fishing and a bait shop, according to the city’s website.
