Student Brought Gun To Gibbs High School: St. Pete Police

A 17-year-old faces charges after a gun was found in his backpack at Gibbs High School, St. Petersburg police said.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — A 17-year-old boy was charged with bringing a gun to Gibbs High School on Tuesday morning, according to a St. Petersburg Police Department news release.

Officers responded to reports of a fight near the school's baseball fields around 11:15 a.m., police said. By the time they got there, the fight was over but officers were able to identify the students who were involved.

They saw the suspect, a senior, remove his backpack and hand it to another student, police said.

Officers stepped in and took the backpack from them, finding a gun inside it, the agency said. They learned the weapon was stolen.

The student was taken into custody and charged.
