Thief Swipes 53 Tennis Rackets from St. Pete School

A number of tennis balls were also taken.

The St. Petersburg Police Department is on the trail of a thief that seems to be in serious need of backhand practice.

According to the department, an employee at Melrose Elementary, 1752 13th Ave. S., went into the school’s physical education storage sheds Tuesday morning and discovered a sizeable theft of equipment. Several boxes containing 53 tennis rackets and an unknown number of tennis balls had been stolen, the agency reported.

Police are now looking for any help they can get from the public in closing the case. Anyone with information about the crime, the person or people involved is asked to text “SPPD” and the tip to TIP411 or call the agency’s tip line at 727-892-5000.
