Top 10 Fall Prep Sports Feats for St. Petersburg Schools

A look at the Top 10 fall high school sports moments of 2010. It was a difficult task choosing the top athletes and sports moments of the fall season at Canterbury, Shorecrest, St. Pete and Northeast.

Choosing 10 of the best moments of fall prep sports from four of our area schools, Canterbury, Northeast, St. Petersburg and Shorecrest, is almost an impossible task.

But 10 feats of local athletes spring to mind. Maybe you have others you would like to recommend?

1. Jessica Piper of St. Petersburg High School won the Class 3A state crown in the 100-backstroke by edging Ashlee Linn of Sarasota Riverview with a time of 55.81 to Linn's 55.89. Linn also finished second in the 200 individual medley.

2. Jack Stein, Shorecrest. The sophomore was a state runner-up in the one-meter diving competition. He finished with 448 points, just shy of Seth Jacobson's 449.65.

3. Canterbury girls volleyball squad defeated West Palm Beach Summit Christian 25-11, 25-16, 25-12 in the Class 1A region final to advance to the  state semifinals, only to lose to eventual state champion South Daytona Warner Christian Academy 25-19, 25-11, 25-8.

4. Hannah Stein, a junior at Shorecrest, finished fourth in Class 1A in the one-meter diving competition.

5. With a 51-6 drubbing of Dunedin in mid-November, St. Petersburg's football squad completed its regular season undefeated, a rare feat.

6. Northeast's volleyball team was able to win its district by topping Pinellas Park to advance to host a Class 5A region quarterfinal match.

7. The volleyball squad at Northeast wasn't the school's only team that played in a region semifinal. With a 33-26 win over Boca Ciega, Northeast secured a district runner-up slot allowing the Vikings to advance to the postseason.

8. Shorecrest's 200 medley relay team of Hope Andrews, Paige Tripp, Rachel Thigpen, Meredith Little posted the county's best time and placed 16th in the Class 1A state tournament with a time of 2:02.51.

9. In a mid-October game against longtime county rivals, Boca Ciega gave St. Petersburg a run at an upset. But what the visiting Pirates failed to do was stop Green Devils running back Rashad Lewis. Lewis scored five touchdowns on runs of 45, 3, 14, 39 and 10 yards in a 42-26 St. Petersburg win.

10. It's a short walk from Shorecrest to Canterbury, which makes for a great rivalry. Shorecrest has the more established football program, and for many years the superior one. But it was Canterbury that thumped Shorecrest in early October. Brent O'Neal and James Goodwin each had a pair of touchdowns for the Crusaders.
