Wanted: 36,000 Pounds of Stolen Crisco
The search for the missing Crisco sticks swiped in St. Petersburg continues.

While a tractor-trailer stolen in St. Petersburg Sunday has been recovered in Hialeah, the hunt for the missing 18 tons of Crisco baking sticks continues.
St. Petersburg Police spokeswoman Yolanda Fernandez confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the slick cargo stowed inside the 2005 red Volvo semi’s trailer is still missing. The truck was reported missing from Coastal Towing, 2390 118th Ave. N., on Sunday.
The Hialeah Police Department recovered the tractor-trailer Tuesday, but as it turns out the cargo was nowhere to be found.

The search for the Crisco is no longer in the hands of local police, Fernandez said.
“It’s now being handled by the Cargo Theft Task Force,” she said. That’s a multi-agency task force that operates in South Florida where thefts of that nature occur more frequently, she added.

Fernandez said officials are not speculating why thieves might want that much Crisco.
“That’s all the information I have,” she said.
The Crisco was initially bound for the Publix distribution center in Lakeland. When thieves broke into the St. Petersburg lot, they also rummaged through a semi loaded with packages from the Amazon.com distribution center in Ruskin. While some items were removed from the Amazon truck, the thieves passed it over for the trailer hauling Crisco instead.
