Watch: Extended Video Shows St. Pete Bicyclist Had Right Of Way

St. Petersburg Police are seeking the public's help to identify a driver involved in a hit-and-run crash with a bicyclist.

ST. PETERSBURG, FL — Following some vigorous debate on social media regarding a video released by the St. Petersburg Police Department Friday of a hit-and-run crash involving a bicyclist, the police have released a more complete version of the video.

The first video released by police was an edited version that shows the bicyclist, Steven Weldon, crossing 49th Street on the Pinellas Trail at 666 49th St. S. on Nov. 1. Viewers said it looked as if Weldon purposely put himself in danger by crossing the road while traffic was approaching.

The extended video released by police shows that Weldon had the right of way at the time of the accident. Two bicyclists riding from the opposite direction can be seen stopping at the intersection and pushing the button to activate the crossing signal and stop traffic before proceeding across the road. Seconds later, Weldon crossed the intersection while the flashing lights to stop traffic were still activated.

Weldon was treated for broken bones and other injuries when he was struck by a white Chevrolet 200 sedan. The driver stopped to move the bike off the road and drove on.

"Although the bicyclist could've exercised more caution and stopped, he had the right of way and won't face any charges," said St. Pete Police in a statement released this week. "It is the law that drivers stop if there is anyone in a crosswalk. The driver who hit him was obligated to stay at the scene until police arrived.
