A national spotlight was put on Florida Tuesday courtesy of Comedy Centralβs Jon Stewart.

Duval, Baker and Clay counties have all suspended courthouse marriages following last weekβs legalization of same-sex marriage. The decision, officials have stated, was meant to prevent putting clerks in situations where they feel βuncomfortable.β Rather than discriminate, the counties have stopped performing marriage ceremonies for traditional and same-sex couples alike.
βWe donβt want to cause discrimination against county court employees who donβt feel like following the law,β Stewart blasted. βThese people didnβt choose to be county clerks, they were born that way.β

Stewart went on with a lengthy discussion about some of Floridaβs more unusual crime stories, including the shoplifter accused of stuffing a chainsaw down his pants and the pet shop owner accused of beating employees with a lizard. That same pet store was also the site of an infamous cockroach-eating contest where a man died after choking on an insect, Stewart was quick to point out.
The stateβs motto, Steward concluded, could be, βIf Darwin was right, we wouldnβt be here.β
The monologue was a lead-in to the introduction of Rubio, who appeared on the show to promote his new book, βAmerican Dreams.β
The Republican from Florida wasted no time in jabbing back.
βYou donβt plan to go to Florida anytime soon,β he asked before he was even seated. βYouβre a candidate for a lizard beating.β
