A national spotlight was put on Florida Tuesday courtesy of Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart.
In honor of special guest U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio, “The Daily Show” host opened with a monologue dedicated to some of the state’s follies, unusual headlines and flops. Stewart pinned his rant about the state on some county clerks’ decisions against performing same-sex marriages.

Duval, Baker and Clay counties have all suspended courthouse marriages following last week’s legalization of same-sex marriage. The decision, officials have stated, was meant to prevent putting clerks in situations where they feel “uncomfortable.” Rather than discriminate, the counties have stopped performing marriage ceremonies for traditional and same-sex couples alike.
“We don’t want to cause discrimination against county court employees who don’t feel like following the law,” Stewart blasted. “These people didn’t choose to be county clerks, they were born that way.”

Stewart went on with a lengthy discussion about some of Florida’s more unusual crime stories, including the shoplifter accused of stuffing a chainsaw down his pants and the pet shop owner accused of beating employees with a lizard. That same pet store was also the site of an infamous cockroach-eating contest where a man died after choking on an insect, Stewart was quick to point out.
The state’s motto, Steward concluded, could be, “If Darwin was right, we wouldn’t be here.”
The monologue was a lead-in to the introduction of Rubio, who appeared on the show to promote his new book, “American Dreams.”
The Republican from Florida wasted no time in jabbing back.
“You don’t plan to go to Florida anytime soon,” he asked before he was even seated. “You’re a candidate for a lizard beating.”
