With a Toss of the Baseball, Mayor Pitches St. Pete as a Sports Town

'It's important that people know that we're going to keep that baseball tradition here at Al Lang Stadium,' Mayor Bill Foster said before making the ceremonial pitch.

ST. PETERSBURG - Mayor Bill Foster threw out the ceremonial first pitch on a glorious Monday afternoon at Al Lang Field, where the 13-game International Baseball Series is under way, with Penn State taking on the Seoul (South Korea) Nexen Heroes.

The series, which will pit three international squads against both college and Major League Baseball teams, is a way to keep baseball at historic Al Lang Field. It also will serve as an audition for St. Pete to host the World Baseball Classic.

“It’s important that people know that we’re going to keep that baseball tradition here at Al Lang Stadium,” Mayor Foster said before tossing out the first pitch. “It’s a great product that they’re going to see, a great opportunity to get out in the sun and see a very high level of baseball.”

Along with Foster’s first pitch, which could have been labeled a generous high strike, the reigning Miss Florida Jaclyn Raulerson, wowed visitors with her rendition of the National Anthem.
