Beware Of Guys With Gas Cans

Maybe it’s the summer heat or perhaps the world is just getting crazier by the day, but here’s a story that all good Samaritans should be aware of especially while driving the highways and byways of our nation.

 A friend of mine recently saw a guy carrying a small gas can walking along the I-94 highway in Michigan.  Being the kind person he is, my friend stopped and picked up the stranger so he could drive him to the next gas station.  Once in the car he asked the gas can toter where he had parked his car.  The answer:  “I don’t have a car.  I am a hitchhiker and it is easier to be picked up while walking with a gas can than by just extending a thumb”.  Whoops!  My friend stops his car and out goes the hitchhiker.  Lesson:  never pick up hitchhikers especially those carrying gas cans!

Seems not a day goes by that we hear about some new scam most of which seem to prey on senior citizens.  I don’t know about you but as a senior citizen myself I never pick up hitchhikers; rarely answer the front door for strangers trying to sell me windows or roofing; and never make charitable donations over the phone.  Call me a cynic but in this world of con artists and charlatans all of us have to be on guard at all times.  Yes, that is a sad state of affairs but it is reality.

So now go ahead and enjoy your summer.  Just look out for gas can toters!
