What Should the City Do with the Vacant Lot next to Acropolis Meat Market on Tarpon Avenue?
Should the City open up the fenced in property it owns on Tarpon Avenue for an Artist's park?
Several years ago the commercial building next to Acropolis Meats was determined to be a hazard and was torn down by the City. Since then it has been fenced off and turned over the City Government Controlled CRA. Prior to that I suggested making a small park there that would connect through to Court Street and create an Artist's Park that would connect Court Street to Tarpon Avenue, since the property goes through to each street. It would cost little more than what has been spent so far to demolish the building and the City could use money from the Tree fund to landscape the area. In addition, it would be a great connection to the City owned parking lot that is seldom used behind the Train Depot and allow for more events to be successful on both Tarpon Avenue and Court Street. It would attract more evening strolls through downtown Tarpon and when I asked individual merchants they were in favor of the idea. The only issue was that someone did not want to see the facia on the downtown to have a hole in the middle of the block. The city has little investment there, it would cost little to create a park there and it may attract additional business to downtown. I also believe volunteer organizations would be proud to take on the project to keep it green and clean. I think that it should not be sold and should be made into a park to attract new business and add to the tourist sites. If enough people ask for a park to be built there it could become a reality very easily and very inexpensively. Let The City Commissioners know how you feel.
