Workshop at the Heritage Museum January 24-25, 2013

Workshop recently held at Heritage Museum , Tarpon Springs to promote training for the certification for Historic preservation of buildings and what a "Certified Local Government" (CLG) means.

Β  Β On Jan.24-25, 2013 I attended a workshop at the Heritage Museum entitled "Certified Local Government Training Workshop". Β It was sponsored by a grant Β from the Division of Historical Resources, Florida Department of State, Β to provide regional historic preservation training to historic preservation staff, board members, and volunteers. Β In attendance were representatives and speakers from as far as Miami and Tallahassee. Β It also was cosponsored by the City of Tarpon Springs and the Florida Trust For Historic Preservation.

This was a tremendous opportunity and I thank The City for offering to have the workshop here and for its financial and staff assistance in making this a tremendous success. Β It was a tremendous undertaking and it was a proactive way to introduce people to Β Historic Tarpon Spriings and to share the historic preservation experience and successes Tarpon Springs has gained through recent years.

As I listened to speakers from various agencies as well as our own city representatives I was impressed with just how much is going on to help preserve historic properties throughout the state. Β

City staff opened the Safford House for a tour and reception thursday evening and on friday they chartered two of the Trolleys for the morning and we had the opportunity to visit the Cultural Center and have a tour, the train depot and another tour and we visited and toured the sponge docks and were Β shown the various historic homes and their relevance to the community. Β It was very professionally done and the City should be proud of the job done by staff to make sure this was a successful workshop.

In addiiton, most of the people stayed at area hotels and the historic 1910 Inn on Tarpon Avenue. They shopped at the Sponge Docks and downtown and ate meals at area restaurants. Β Many of the individuals I spoke with said they would return and visit with family and would highly recommend the City to others.
