Located between the Caspian Sea and the Persian Gulf and surrounded by splendid mountains, Persia, has one of the richest and oldest cultures in the world. For more than five thousand years Persia was a melting pot of civilizations and demographic movements between Asia and Europe, and under Cyrus the Great, Persia became the center of the world's first empires. Come and explore the great wonders and mythology of Persia, hear the stories of the lost empires, and learn more about the arts, the beautiful classic and folkloric dances and music, the culture, costuming, the language and the people that created this historical country.
Topics that will be covered include:
Persian Classical and Mystical Dances along with Whirling- Experience one of the world’s most enchanting dance forms! Classical and Sacred Dance of Persia and Central Asia are inspired by Persian poetry and miniature artwork. Many great Persian poets extolled dance in their poems and used it as a symbol of the power of life; Hafiz, Saddi, Omar Khayam, and Mevlana (Rumi) each represented dance as a spiritual instrument to become one with the spiritual being. The movements often reflect the swirling arabesque, sweeping gesture, shoulder isolations, footwork patterns and dazzling spins and whirling. We will focus on the classical and mystical dances which includes dances of the Persian miniature art, dances of the fairies, dance of the mystical elements and whirling.
Persian and Central Asian Folkloric Dances - These selections of festive dances reflect the energy, grace, humor, and lyricism of Silk Road Dances. The dances are usually danced at holiday, cultural festivities, rituals. Persian folk and Central Asian dances styles include – Kurdi, Bandari, Gilaki, Qashqa’i, and much more. In this workshop we will learn a few of these folk styles along with dances from Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Azerbaijan, and Uzbekistan.
