PETER T. ASSIMACK MEMORIALFISHING TOURNAMENT
Peter T. Assimack absolutely loved to fish. For the past seventeen years we have celebrated his life with the annual fishing tournament that bears his name and, since its inception in 1996, has raised scholarship money for 52
college-bound students of Tarpon Springs High School, Peter's alma mater. Born and raised in Tarpon Springs, Peter played football for the Tarpon High Spongers and graduated from the school in 1979. He later graduated from the University of Florida and became an accountant.
An upstanding member of the community, Peter served as the President of the Chamber of Commerce, President of the Florida Conservation Association, and board member of the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral. He was also a member of the local Rotary. However, Peter truly gleaned the most happiness from fishing, spending time with family, and changing the lives of the children who were so blessed to have known him. In essence, through the tournament itself, as well as the purpose behind it, those who knew Peter can remember him fondly and those who did have the opportunity to meet him can understand and appreciate
how genuine he was.
The Peter T. Assimack Memorial Fishing Tournament is a not-for-profit 501 (c) 3 Charity that is run entirely by volunteers. This year, the annual tournament will take place on Saturday, April 27 at Tarpon Springs Yacht
Club, with the Captain's Meeting scheduled for the night before on April 26th. The tournament begins at 6:30 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m., with the photo finish judging and award ceremony to follow. The Tournament is a catch and release photo finish tournament, requiring anglers to submit only photos for judging. On-sight photo development will be available at the weigh-in. While this service is not connected with or provided by the tournament committee, all anglers who wish to utilize the
service may do so at their own risk.

The Tournament is structured with an Open division ($100 entry) for those fishing with a guide on board, a Sportsman’s division ($75 entry) for which excludes guides
and a kid’s (12 years and under) division ($20 entry). All kids are winners in the Peter T. Assimack
Memorial Fishing Tournament; each is awarded a rod/reel combo, tee shirt and award for participating. The Open and
Sportsman’s division pays 3 places for each species, Snook, Redfish and Trout. Kids are a 100% payout and are
awarded trophies for places 1st through 5th. The 6 first place winners, one for each species Snook, Redfish and Trout in each division receive a unique stainless steel trophy, representing each species along with cash and prizes. All in all, we average giving back to the anglers about $20,000 in cash and prizes.
Mercury Outboard is the tournament’s major event sponsor. Several others support the tournament as
well, all of which play a role in the continuing success of the tournament, and for this the committee and the scholarship recipients are extremely grateful. The tournament raises money to award anywhere from three to six scholarships each year. Recipients of the scholarship have gone on to
reach a myriad of different career goals ranging from CPA licenses to engineering and teaching degrees. Many
of these students keep in touch with our committee and the Assimack Family and return to the Annual Sponsor's Dinner to speak about their journey post-high school, the educations they achieved, and how the scholarship helped them accomplish their dreams. Each year at the Sponsor's Dinner, these moments are precious and they would have brought so much joy to Peter.
