The City of Tarpon Springs has created a series of public programs to accompany the current Journey Stories exhibition. For the program Scholars & Stories, prizewinning Florida scholars explore local and regional immigration—and tell their own journey stories. Gary Mormino will speak about Ybor City, Ray Arsenault will discuss African American journey stories, Jose Fernandez will explore Cuban settlement, and Jeff Klinkenberg will reflect on northerners in Florida. The program will take place from 7:30-9:00pm.
The Smithsonian exhibition Journey Stories explores the powerful tales of how we and our ancestors came to America and to the place we now call home. Journey Stories is a Museum on Main Street (MoMS) exhibition created by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES) and made available through a grant from the Florida Humanities Council. Visitors also can enjoy Journeys to Tarpon Springs, a small exhibition featuring items brought by local families to remind them of the homes and families left behind. The exhibits will be featured at the City of Tarpon Springs’ Center for Gulf Coast Folklife from Thursday, April 11 through Friday, July 5, 2013.
