At a press conference this morning, Pinellas County Government andΒ theΒ Pinellas County Sheriff’s OfficeΒ urged residents to make final preparationsΒ toΒ shelter in placeΒ by this eveningΒ as Tropical Storm Elsa approaches the Tampa Bay area.Β Β

To ensure safety,Β the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office will limit barrier island access starting at 6 p.m. today until 7 a.m. Wednesday, Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri announced. Access will be permitted only for island residents, employees working on the islands and visitors staying at hotelsΒ or vacation rentalsΒ on the islands.Β

The County is asking residents to shelter in place,Β unless in a low-lying area that is at risk of flooding. Pinellas County Emergency Management Director Cathie Perkins reminded residents in flood-prone areas that they should seek shelter with friends or family in a safer area if possible, or at one of the County’s two community shelters as a last resort. A mandatory evacuation hasΒ notΒ been issued.Β Β

Pinellas County officials also reminded residents that first responders will not be able to respond to calls once winds reach 40 miles per hour.Β

Outer bands with strong winds and rain will reach PinellasΒ as early as 5Β or 6 p.m., with stormΒ impacts starting around 8 p.m.Β Pinellas County could see three to five feet of storm surge overnight and into tomorrow morning. The storm is expected to exit the area by 9 a.m. on Wednesday. Pinellas County is under aΒ Hurricane Watch,Β TropicalΒ Storm Warning, Storm Surge Warning and Flood Watch.Β

The CountyΒ hasΒ opened two shelters as a lastΒ resortΒ for residentsβ€―who do not have a safe place to shelter:Β 

Β·Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Theβ€―Lealman Exchange, located at 5175 45thβ€―St. N in St. Petersburg,β€―isΒ openβ€―forβ€―the general population,β€―those with special needs andβ€―persons withβ€―pets. Β 

Β·Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Β Ross Norton Recreation Centerβ€―shelter, located at 1426 S. Martin Luther King Jr Ave.β€―in Clearwater,Β isΒ open to the general population. Β

Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority (PSTA) will offerβ€―freeβ€―ridesβ€―to the two shelters.β€―Pets will be permitted on evacuation buses as long as they are in a pet carrier.β€―The latest information on PSTA bus service can be obtained by calling theβ€―InfoLineβ€―at 727-540-1900 or by visiting their website atβ€―https://psta.net/riding-psta/weather-alert/Β
