131st Avenue East Closes After Hole Opens

Update Aug. 28, 7:40 p.m.: The city of Tampa has announced the westbound lane of East 131st Avenue between North Nebraska and North 15th Street is closed. Detours have been set up in the area. It is unclear how long the closing will last.

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office is asking motorists to steer clear of 131st Avenue East Friday afternoon.

Officials say a possible water line rupture has caused a whole to open. The hole is estimated to be 3 feet across and about 15 feet deep.

As of noon, the road was closed between Nebraska Avenue and 15th Street.

It is unclear how long the road will remain closed. The Tampa Water Department is assessing the situation.
