National AAASHE Association Selects Mortenson

Tom Mortenson, former Temple Terrace Community Development Director and Becker County Administrator has been selected to review presentations for the National Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) Conference October 6-9 in Nashville, Tennessee.

The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) is one of the largest thought-leader organizations in higher education sustainability. AASHE’s mission is to empower higher education to lead the sustainability transformation by providing resources, professional development, and a network of support to enable institutions of higher education to model and advance sustainability in everything they do, from governance and operations to education and research. The University of South Florida is a member of AASHE.

Mortenson was selected by the National organization as one of their reviews because of his expertise in the field of sustainability and leadership. As Becker County Administrator, Mortenson began an active program to make the county government operations more aware of conservation with programs such as having employees recycle tons of paper and better utilization of government equipment, replacing various paper products with environmentally friendlier material, and replacing wasteful energy practices, within the context of saving taxpayer money and making government more efficient.

Mortenson will review approximately 15-25 submissions to determine those that provide high quality and timely presentations for ASSHE conference attendees. Mortenson said he is looking for presentations that will surprise, inspire, empower and motivate conference attendees into action on their campuses and surrounding communities. With this year’s theme in mind, “Resiliency & Adaptation,” he would like to see innovations, activities, frameworks, learning outcomes, tools, strategies, research, theory, and leadership initiatives that are changing the face of sustainability in higher education and their surrounding communities" Mortenson said.
