Winn-Dixie And Customers Donate More Than 19,283 Pounds Of Food To The Harry Chapin Food Bank Of Southwest Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. (Feb. 6, 2013) — Winn-Dixie, their customers and vendors helped local food banks fight hunger in their communities with Winn-Dixie’s Hunger Relief campaign. Recently, Winn-Dixie presented representatives from the Harry Chapin Food Bank of Southwest Florida with a check representing 19,283 pounds of food to feed more than 15,000 Southwest Florida families in need.

The Winn-Dixie Hunger Relief program ran from Nov. 7 through Dec. 24, where customers easily donated through tear pads/scan sheets at store registers and by purchasing specially marked Winn-Dixie brand products. All dollars raised from Nov. 7 through Dec. 24 benefited regional Feeding America-affiliated food banks, including the Harry Chapin Food Bank, to provide nutritious, fresh foods for communities across Winn-Dixie’s operating area.

The Harry Chapin Food Bank solicits, collects and stores quality food for distribution to families in need through a network of 160 nonprofit agencies in Lee, Collier, Hendry, Charlotte and Glades counties that provide food to more than 30,000 people monthly.  Over 1 million pounds of food are distributed by the Harry Chapin Food Bank monthly.  For every dollar donated, about $6 in food value goes back to the community.  In the past fiscal year, the Harry Chapin Food Bank distributed more than 15 million pounds of food and other grocery items valued at more than $24.9 million.
