An Only Child Claims 'I Didn't Do It'

Do you ever have the problem of not knowing which child left the toys out or spilt their juice? But what happens when you have an only child?

"It’s not my fault."

"I didn’t do it."

"I don’t know how that got there."

My son must repeat these sentences all day at school to make sure he gets them right for when he comes home. I’m sure that I would have a piggy bank full of quarters if I was allotted one quarter for each time my son said them.

The ironic thing about my son saying that it’s not his fault that the juice spilled, or that he didn’t leave the toys in the middle of the room is that, well, he is an only child. (That fact does make me laugh quite often when he tries these lines.)

When I explain to him that he is the only child who lives in our household and was playing with the toys or that he was the only one drinking from the cup, it hits him like a ton of bricks that it couldn’t be anyone else. (Yes, that’s when the rolling of the eyes begins. Funny how quickly they learn that look.)

The thing that makes me laugh even more is that he will then try one of those lines again either later in the day or even moments later.

I can say one thing: Having an only child does make it easier in knowing “who did it.” Although sometimes I do have to make sure it wasn’t my husband who left the video game controller in the middle of the couch or floor. LOL.
