Buttonbush Blooming in Riverhills Park

Blooming buttonbush attracts butterflies and bees.

Another sure sign of May: Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) is blooming in Riverhills Park.

The round white flower heads make this wetland shrub visually dramatic and bring a punch of color to the May landscape.

Buttonbush is considered a Florida native plant but could also be grown in the yard in wet or poorly drained spots. The partly shaded riverbank along the park's boardwalk provides an excellent habitat for this shrub.

Buttonbush is also a nectar plant for bees and butterflies, yet another reason to enjoy it on your walks.
