Do you ever feel like you are a dentist pulling teeth?
How was your child's day at school? I often have difficulty finding out.
Each day I ask my 5-year-old son, “How was your day?” To which I get the response, “Good.” I then smirk while I continue with the list of questions that I know is going to be required in order to learn about his day and how he felt about his daily activities and the things that interest him. This is how the rest goes:
Mom: What did you do today?
Son: Nothing?

Mom: You had to do something....you were there all day.
Son: I ate lunch?

Mom: What did you eat? (Keep in mind I already know the answer because I’m the one who made his lunch.)
Son: The food in my lunchbox. (Smart Alec)
Mom: Did you eat it all?
Son: (shrugs shoulders….as if he doesn’t know what he ate.)
Mom: Did you color?
Son: Yes
Mom: What did you color?
Son: Well, a kid was sitting beside me and he said that we should play kickball together outside and I said OK.
Mom: (Slightly confused at the change of topic….) So, did you play with him?
Son: Yes, but kickball is not like soccer.
Twenty-five questions later I’ve learned: My son had a good day. He ate his lunch that I packed, played kickball with his new friend from school, and learned it had different rules than soccer. He likes his teacher and thinks she was nice for letting him play kickball and that he ended up making friends from another class while he was outside.
I will master this communication thing! I am determined!! I look forward to the day when he says : “Hey Mom, guess what I did today at school.”
But at the end of the past few days, I feel like I have had to pull teeth to get the smallest bit of information out of him.
Maybe I should look into dentistry. :-/
