Is Automobile UM Coverage Really Necessary??
Thinnk carefully before you decline the un-insured and under-insured motorist coverage on your automobile policy.
Historically, Florida has one of the highest uninsured motorist rates in the U.S. Due to the fact that many at-fault drivers carry very little or no insurance, Florida drivers must protect themselves by securing bodily injury coverage under their own policy through un-insured and under-insured motorist (UM) coverage.
In Florida, the minimum bodily injury coverage required is $10,000.00. In the case of serious injury, a visit to the emergency room can easily run in excess of that $10,000.00 in coverage. This will leave little rsources to pay excess medical bills, lost wages, and compensate you for permanent injuries.
Therefore, the only protection you have against an uninsured driver is to carry your own UM coverage. While such coverage is not mandatory, the insurance company must have you sign a waiver if you decline UM coverage. Be sure to discuss with your auto insurance company the UM coverages offered, as it may likely be your only source of recourse in the event of a serious accident.
