Business Profile: Chatenbury Place

The salon has been serving the Temple Terrace community for more than 20 years.

Phyllis Faber was born to work in a salon. From a young age, she took to cutting and styling hair, and she knew she had the knack for it.

“My mother said that if I ever wanted a life for myself that I better pick up some sort of trade,” she said. “So I chose cosmetology, and I got straight A’s in beauty school. I haven’t looked back since.”

Faber graduated from beauty school at the age of 17 and dreamt of owning her own salon.

That dream came true 20 years ago when she asked her friend, Beth Wilson, who was a stylist working with Faber at another salon, to go into business with her. The two opened their own salon, becoming co-owners of .

“We both wanted to own salons, and when I came to her and asked her if she wanted to go into business with me, she did not hesitate,” Faber said. “It has just been such a wonderful experience since then, and we are so glad we have a place like this that continues to help serve the Temple Terrace community.”

Chatenbury Place offers clients an upscale salon experience. The salon, located at 12914 N. 56th St., and is tucked away in a 3,600-square-foot building. According to Faber, every employee has two goals in mind: to help their clients stay relaxed and to help them focus on themselves.

“People come in here to feel completely relaxed,” she said. “No one is asking anything of them or judging them in any kind of way. Our clients experience a beautiful day each time they come here.”

The salon staff is trained and licensed in a variety of hair, nail and skin care services. They also employ a licensed and trained esthetician, who offers services including facials, waxing and lash/brow tinting. According to Faber, the salon staff has more than 100 years of combined experience.

“I am surrounded by so many people here that have been in this business for a very long time,” Faber said. “Everyone supports everyone here, and we all continue to go to classes so we can continue to be up to date with every new service that comes out.”

Most recently, the salon added “FSD light therapy” to the list of services it offers. FSD light therapy is a light-based treatment that creates a natural glow to aging skin. It reduces fine lines and wrinkles, increases elasticity, and stimulates collagen regrowth. The service can be used on the hands, face, and chest. The FDA approved this therapy to be offered by licensed estheticians.

Faber said offering this type of therapy was a big investment for the salon that she thinks will pay off. Chatenbury Place is the only salon in Tampa to offer this service, which Faber said she thinks will help boost the salon’s revenue. Currently, the therapy is offered as a clinical trial, but Faber said she doesn’t see why they would not continue to offer it, as it presents visible benefits to aging/blemished skin.

The salon is anticipating an upcoming press release.

“I know we have to wait the 30 days to officially say we are going to continue to offer it and I don’t want to jump the gun on it because when we do start to officially offer it, we want to know everything there is about it, so we can stand behind it,” she said. “I have used it on my hands, and there are obvious signs that the spots on my hands have dissipated.”

In addition to the services offered, the salon also has merchandise available for purchase in their gift shop, including home decor items, framed art, and the increasingly popular “Mischi Bags.” Right now, the salon is having its annual sidewalk sale, featuring heavy discounts on certain items.

Chatenbury Place continues to be involved within the Temple Terrace community, staying active with the Temple Terrace Chamber of Commerce. The employees participate in a wide variety of community events, including the Independence Day parade.

“We have been serving Temple Terrace for several years, and it is just wonderful because every day you come in here it is like seeing family," Faber said. "With all the familiar faces coming in everyday, we (as employees) get to see everyone in the community grow.”
