Details Emerge in Deputy's Shooting

The 42-year-old Hillsborough County deputy shot while responding to a call Thursday morning is going to be OK.
Thatβs the latest word from the sheriffβs office as its search for the shooter continues.
The incident began to unfold around 12:30 a.m. when the sheriffβs office received a call about shots fired in the 9400 block of Greystone Road in Thonotosassa. When deputies arrived, they began searching the area on foot. As they were doing so, shots were fired at them.

Deputy Scott Ranney was shot once in the leg. Ranney, the sheriffβs office wrote in an email to media, was treated and released from Tampa General Hospital. He has been employed by the sheriffβs office since July 2009. Ranney started his career as a detention deputy and transitioned into patrol in December 2014.

The search for the suspect continues.
The shooting comes on the heels of a Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission officer being injured in the line of duty in the Panhandle area after a gunfight erupted on the water. It also follows an incident last week that resulted in a Clearwater Police Department substation being fired upon.
