Tampa Bay Tech Titans Settle Score at Sling and Shoot

The Titans brought their passing game to one of the biggest 7on7 tournaments in the southeastern United States.


The went 5-3 in group play, getting past Matanzas, Western, Countryside2, Hardee and Cardinal Mooney and falling to Plant1, Steinbrenner and Freedom in the Sling and Shoot 7on7 tournaments at the .

In elimination play, the Titans faced their old rival, Gaither. The two teams split the 2011 fall season series with the Cowboys getting the better end of their regional semifinal.

The Titans got a small measure of revenge on Sunday. They went up two scores early and frustrated the Cowboy offense. They were up 16-6 when Gaither closed the gap to 16-13. However, the Titans could not be stopped. They scored again to take the Cowboys out.

Sophomore quarterback Deon Cain looked very comfortable distributing the ball.

“I’m confident in our team,” said Cain. “We know we’re gonna fight through and execute on every play.”

Head Coach Jayson Roberts said he was impressed with his young quarterback.

“He’s stepped up to the challenge, he’s becoming a real team leader,” Roberts said.

Senior Richard Benjamin, who is committed to UCF, was great, but junior Donzell Polite came up huge in the Freedom game to give the Titans two touchdowns that helped put them in position to win the game.

“Other receivers are opening things up for me,” said Polite. “Deon (Cain) is throwing us open—it was a great team effort.”

Other Titan receivers and defensive backs had stellar tournaments, including junior Tajee Fullwood and senior Jamaruz Thompkins.
