Temple Terrace Celebrates Florida Arbor Day Jan. 19

You might know Dana Carver as parks planner with Temple Terrace Parks and Recreation Division and Joe Gross as director of the city’s Code Compliance Department, but did you know that both men are certified arborists?

They’ll be answering all your tree questions Jan. 19 when the City of Temple Terrace celebrates Florida Arbor Day at Riverhills Park, 11 a.m.-noon. The event is free and open to everyone.

Carver will talk about the proper care and planting of trees, as well as the importance of planting native trees, according to a city press release. Gross will have an update on city regulations related to trees.

“As part of the program, the city will be giving away potted native-tree seedlings (courtesy of T.R.E.E. Inc.) and distributing the Temple Terrace Tree Guide,” the release states. “The full-color brochures provide a wealth of information on identifying, planting and caring for native trees, including tips for pruning and trimming, as well as advice for selecting the ‘right tree for the right place.’”

The brochures are free.

Gross also will talk about the city’s Adopt-A-Tree Program, in which the city provides free trees for homeowners to plant in their yards, according to the release. Species include a variety of oaks, sabal palms, slash pines and bald cypress.

“Homeowners will receive assistance and friendly advice on the care and planting of these trees,” the release states. “Requirements and restrictions apply. The trees are offered during Code Compliance’s monthly neighborhood sweeps.”

In 2008, Temple Terrace became a Tree City USA, a designation sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service.

“Temple Terrace’s Florida Arbor Day event is a great way to learn about native trees, how to plant them and how to help preserve the city’s environmental heritage,” the release states.
