Today marks the 20th anniversary of The Battle of Mogadishu but few Americans will remember it. This was the U.S. operation in Somalia later immortalized in Ridley Scott’s movie “Black Hawk Down” and by Mark Bowden’s book by the same name
For those that remember and those that don’t, this was when two U.S. helicopters were shot down and a search and rescue mission was conducted to save our personnel. After 14 hours of fighting, eighteen Americans were killed, 84 were wounded, and one pilot was missing in the overnight battle with Somali militiamen.
But few who remember can forget how a U.S. soldier was dragged like a dead dog through the dust of Mogadishu by jubilant Somalis.
