White Ibises on the Prowl

If you get out and about in Temple Terrace you've certainly seen a parade of white ibises marching across a new mown lawn.  These flocking tropical birds are easy to identify with their long red legs, white body, red face, and long curved red beak with a black tip.  They use their beaks to dig out insects and other creatures in the soil, so think of them providing a free no-chemical pest control.  We might think these birds are common here in TT but actually their numbers are in decline statewide due to the loss of wetland habitat.  In south Florida, the white ibis was once a subsistence bird for the early pioneers and was dubbed the "Chokoloskee chicken."  Now they are a "State Species of Special Concern."  I'm attaching a photo showing a flock in an unusual position, perched in a tree.  The dark brown bird is a juvenile.
